First-Car Paperwork

Title, registration, plates, and the documents to keep in your glovebox from day one.

Informational only: The content on this page is for educational purposes and does not constitute insurance advice, a quote, or a recommendation to purchase any insurance product.

When you buy your first car, you become responsible for three documents at once: the title that proves ownership, the registration that proves the car is allowed on the road, and the insurance card that proves you are covered.

Keep a current copy of your registration and insurance card in the glovebox. Keep the title at home in a safe place. If a police officer or another driver asks for your information after a minor incident, registration and insurance are what you hand over.
